Cable Beach runs along the north shore of New Providence roughly two miles west of downtown Nassau — a long, pale sand beach fronted by several of Nassau's larger resort properties and backed by the Western Esplanade that connects it to the city. It is Nassau's most developed beach area and, depending on what you are looking for, either the most complete or the most crowded beach option on the island.
Getting There from Nassau
From the Nassau Cruise Port: 15–20 minute taxi, approximately $15–20. From downtown Nassau: $10–15 taxi or a jitney bus along West Bay Street for a fraction of the cost. Cable Beach is not walkable from the cruise terminal — it is too far for the time most shore-day visitors have available, and the walk along West Bay Street, while possible, passes through sections that are not particularly interesting on foot.
From the Baha Mar resort complex: Cable Beach and Baha Mar share the same stretch of coastline. If you are staying at or visiting Baha Mar, the beach is immediately accessible from the property.
The Beach Itself
Cable Beach is about 2 kilometres of pale sand with generally calm water — the north shore of New Providence has some Atlantic exposure but is typically more sheltered than the south shore. The sand is good. The water is warm and clear by any standard, turquoise in the shallows. The bottom is mostly sand with some rocky patches toward the western end.
The beach is public by Bahamian law to the high water mark. The resort properties that line the beach behind it do not legally own the sand, though they do control access through their properties and operate beach chairs and umbrellas on their sections. Non-guests can access the beach by walking along the shoreline rather than through resort properties — this is legal and commonly done.
Watersports at Cable Beach
Cable Beach has the most concentrated watersports rental activity of any Nassau beach. Jet ski rentals, parasailing, paddleboard rentals, banana boat rides, and small sailboat rentals are all available from operators on the beach. Pricing is negotiable and should be agreed before you get in or on anything. Hourly and half-hour rates are standard.
For families with teenagers or active adults who want more than swimming, Cable Beach's watersports density is its main advantage over quieter options like Saunders Beach or Love Beach.
Baha Mar — The Complex Behind the Beach
The Baha Mar resort complex — which includes three hotel brands, a casino, and extensive dining and entertainment — sits directly behind Cable Beach and has transformed the western section of the beach since its opening. Non-guests can access Baha Mar's restaurants and bars without hotel reservations, though beach chair and pool access is typically limited to guests.
The complex has several restaurants and bars worth visiting on their own terms — not necessarily for the beach experience, but as a Nassau dining and entertainment destination that happens to be adjacent to Cable Beach.
Cable Beach vs Other Nassau Beaches
- vs Saunders Beach: Cable Beach has more facilities, more watersports, and more crowd. Saunders Beach has calmer water, no vendors, and genuine quiet. For families with young children, Saunders is typically the better choice.
- vs Love Beach: Love Beach has better snorkeling and less commercial activity. Cable Beach has more to do on the surface. For snorkelers, Love Beach wins; for families wanting activity variety, Cable Beach wins.
- vs Bahama Bay Pool Club: If your shore time is limited and your priority is swimming in a managed, close-to-the-ship environment, Bahama Bay Pool Club at 2 minutes from the cruise terminal is the more practical choice for cruise guests specifically.
→ Bahama Bay Pool Club — 2 min from cruise terminal
The Bottom Line
Cable Beach is the right Nassau beach for visitors who want watersports options, resort-level facilities, and a long stretch of sand to walk. It is Nassau's most complete beach day destination for active visitors. It is not the quietest, not the most local, and not the most convenient for cruise guests with limited time. With those caveats in mind, it consistently delivers on its own terms.
